Bonobo Center, 2016
Jasper Georgia
As a secondary option, if timing at the Safari Park does not meet the needs of the Bonobos, we investigated the feasibility of a wonderful residential site in North Georgia. This large property had a fully developed infrastructure of roads, utilities and a large rustic home that could be developed as an administrative center.
We have develop an initial Concept Plan that makes use of the largest open fields to locate two large habitats, each with 2500 s.f. holding buildings. One habitat is approximately 1.25 acres and the other is twice that size at 2.5 acres.
Habitats will be designed with a safe, front moat and 17’ high rear fenceline. Some existing trees will be included in the habitat and more will be planted and hotwired until sturdy. Small shelters will be provided for up-close viewing and observation. The Habitats will be interconnected with an overhead transfer chute of the entry drive.
The Cabin will be developed for administrative and hospitality functions, with three offices on the second floor, and staff check-in, break and lunch room, meeting rooms and small conference rooms on the first floor. Minor renovations will be needed to adapt the Cabin. The basement Garage can be utilized for storage and warehouse uses. The Caretaker House can be utilized for landscape and maintenance shop, with the second floor used for overnight accommodation and Keeper offices.
A future development area is a second habitat for a second group of Bonobos or Chimpanzees with an even larger potential habitat which can incorporate some large existing trees within the enclosure.
While this option would be available right away, it would mean that this facility would stand alone, and would not provide the kinds of synergy that the Safari Park provided. This would be a "University Primate Center" for Georgia State and Kennesaw and provide facilities for Administrative retreats, Educational Camps and potentially open to the public. The price was very reasonable and the location only 1 hour away from Campus was quite appealing, there were no funds available to support this option.
